Troubleshooting
This section covers common issues and their solutions when working with the Road Spline Tool.
Terrain Painting Issues
Terrain painting not working
Problem: Materials are not being applied to the terrain under the road spline.
Cause: Wrong material selected or incorrect parameters.
Solution:
- Check that the correct material is selected in the material slider
- Adjust the material slider to see if any materials are more apparent
- Adjust the margin settings to ensure proper coverage
- Reset all parameters to their default positions
- Verify the terrain painting feature is enabled
Edge Blending Problems
Visible seams or gaps in edge blending
Problem: Transitions between road materials and surrounding terrain are not smooth, showing gaps or seams.
Cause: Edge blending layers may not be covering the entire transition area.
Solution:
- Adjust the width of the edge blending layers
- Modify the lateral position slightly to cover any gaps
- Ensure edge blending layers are enabled and properly configured
- Check that the blending materials are compatible with both road and terrain
Layer Material Conflicts
Paint layers overlapping or conflicting
Problem: Different road layers are interfering with each other or showing wrong materials.
Cause: Layers are positioned too close together or have conflicting material properties.
Solution:
- Ensure layers are sufficiently separated to avoid conflicts
- Pay particular attention to paint layers over meshes - keep them apart
- Check layer ordering and material priorities
- Adjust layer spacing and positioning
Performance Issues
Tool becomes slow with complex roads
Problem: The tool becomes unresponsive or laggy when working with complex road networks.
Cause: Too many road splines, complex layering, or very long splines.
Solution:
- Reduce the number of road splines in the scene
- Simplify complex layer structures
- Break long road splines into shorter segments
- Reduce the number of material layers per road
Spline Visibility Issues
Road spline disappears
Problem: Road spline becomes invisible or can’t be found.
Cause: Spline may be underground, off-screen, or have color/lighting conflicts.
Solution:
- Use the “Go To Spline” button to locate and focus on the spline
- Check if the spline is underground or positioned off-screen
- Adjust lighting or color settings if there are visibility conflicts
Session Management
Road splines disappear between sessions
Problem: Work is lost when restarting the tool.
Cause: Splines are designed not to persist between sessions by default.
Solution:
- Use the round-trip recovery system to import existing splines
- Select road objects in the scene tree to estimate spline parameters
- The tool can recover splines from scene meshes automatically
Material and Texture Issues
Road materials not loading or displaying
Problem: Can’t see road materials or textures.
Cause: Material files may be corrupted or in unsupported formats.
Solution:
- Check that material files are in supported formats
- Verify material file paths are correct
- Try reloading or reimporting materials
- Check console for material loading errors
When to Report Bugs
If you encounter any of these issues, they may indicate a bug:
- Propagation rules not working properly
- Tool window freezing without performance cause
- Material conflicts that can’t be resolved
- File corruption or unreadable data
Recommendation: Reload the tool and try again. If the problem persists, check the console for error messages and report the issue with specific steps to reproduce.
